A front-of-house that feels like anything but a dentist's

Most people walk into a dental practice already a little on edge. That was the first thing Arden House asked us to design against. Their clinic in Charlton Kings does careful, high-quality work, and they wanted the space that greets you to say so before anyone says a word. Not clinical. Not so polished it feels unapproachable. Calm, clean, welcoming, and quietly reassuring.

The brief

The ask was clear, and in its way unusual for a clinical setting. Warm rather than sterile. Considered rather than showy. A front-of-house that makes someone's shoulders drop the moment they step through the door, whether they are in for a routine check-up or something that has made them nervous for weeks.

The design

We built the whole scheme around softness and light. Walls in a gentle sage green (Dulux Fresh Foliage) set the tone through the entrance and reception, grounded by warm walnut and a clean marble-look worktop so the space reads fresh and cared-for without ever feeling cold. Warm 3000K lighting runs throughout, a ribbon of light over the desk, filament pendants above the counters, so nothing carries that flat overhead glare you expect from a waiting room.

The reception does its practical work quietly. A two-person main desk, L-shaped, sits alongside a smaller meet-and-greet counter, both in the same walnut and marble language, with an integrated handbag shelf and hidden storage so the surfaces stay clear. Opposite, a custom-built bench seat with storage tucked underneath, and a display-and-storage unit that gives the team somewhere to show treatments and skincare without the room tipping into retail.

Then the green. A living plant wall at the entrance with a welcome worked into it, and planted boxes above the desk, so the first thing you meet is something alive and growing rather than a reception screen. It is the detail that moves the room from clinic to somewhere you would happily sit for a few minutes. There is a softer snug corner now too, a place to settle before an appointment. For anyone who finds the dentist stressful, that small moment of calm is the whole point.

The result

The finished space did something we always love to see. It changed how the practice sees itself. Arden House went on to refresh their own branding to pick up the colours of the new interior, so the identity you meet online now matches the one you feel when you walk in. The space and the brand finally tell the same story: calm, clean, and genuinely welcoming.
