A guest bedroom often gets left until last, the room that quietly waits while the rest of the house comes together. At Prestbury Road, we wanted to give it just as much thought as any other space, so that anyone staying feels genuinely looked after from the moment they walk in.

The brief was to create a room that felt calm, characterful, and welcoming. Somewhere restful for family and friends to stay, layered enough to feel considered, but easy and relaxed rather than precious. A room that works just as well for a weekend visit as it does sitting quietly the rest of the week.

The Guest Bedroom

We began with the walls, because getting the backdrop right sets the tone for everything else. The panelling behind the bed was colour drenched in Farrow & Ball Pigeon No. 25, a soft grey green that feels grounded and quietly restful. Carrying the same colour across the panelling and joinery lets it wrap around the room, so the bed sits within the scheme rather than against it. The remaining walls were kept light in Paint & Paper Library Slate II, the same soft off white we used through the main suite, which keeps the whole home feeling connected from room to room.

The upholstered bed takes centre stage, its softly scalloped headboard in natural linen bringing a gentle, characterful shape to the room. We dressed it in crisp white bed linen and layered from there: olive green botanical cushions that pick up the tones in the panelling, and a natural woven stripe bolster to add texture and warmth. The palette stays earthy and calm, easy to live with and easy to rest in.

Above the bed, a trio of abstract prints in oak frames brings a more contemporary note, their soft charcoal shapes balancing the traditional lines of the headboard. It is this mix of old and new, classic and current, that keeps the room feeling collected rather than styled.

Overhead, a tiered jute pendant adds instant warmth and texture, softening the light and giving the ceiling something lovely to look up to. On the bedside, a ceramic table lamp with a linen shade casts a low, gentle glow for reading last thing at night.

In the corner, we created a quiet spot to sit with a boucle and oak armchair, the kind of chair that invites you to slow down with a book or a morning coffee. Underfoot, a scalloped edge rug in soft grey grounds the scheme and adds another layer of comfort, while a potted olive tree brings in natural greenery and a little life.

The result is a guest room that feels warm, calm, and genuinely welcoming. A space that tells anyone staying that they were thought about, and one that quietly earns its place in the rest of the home.

Project before and After

When we first walked into this room, it was a blank space with plenty of potential but little warmth or personality. By layering in colour, texture, and carefully considered details, we turned it into a guest bedroom that now feels elegant, inviting, and truly lived in.
